After 35 editions, the Sgambeda is making way for a new phase in Livigno’s winter calendar. This decision reflects the desire to embrace the destination’s evolution and look ahead to the coming years with the same forward-thinking approach that has enabled Livigno to build one of the strongest sporting identities on the international stage over time.
For more than three decades, the Sgambeda has been at the heart of winter in Livigno. Thirty kilometres through the Alpine landscape have made the race one of the most recognisable events marking the start of the season, attracting athletes and amateur skiers year after year.
Its story, however, goes far beyond sporting results. The Sgambeda has accompanied the growth of cross-country skiing in Livigno, helping to foster a Nordic skiing culture that today represents one of the most distinctive elements of the destination’s sporting identity. It is a story shaped by great champions, elite-level training, trails and infrastructure that over the years have become a benchmark for athletes and federations from around the world, as well as by a community that has embraced a discipline deeply rooted in its local area.
It is also thanks to this long-standing experience that Livigno can today be regarded as an elite destination: the ideal place to prepare for a season, train in high-quality technical conditions and work at altitude. This is a legacy built over time, to which the Sgambeda has made an important contribution, season after season.
Livigno is now looking ahead to what comes next, with the aim of continuing to develop its sporting vocation and the role of cross-country skiing within its winter offering. The evolution of the calendar forms part of a broader vision for the destination, focused on consolidating what has already been built while, at the same time, identifying new opportunities for growth, in line with the path Livigno has pursued in recent years.
The Sgambeda deserves our gratitude for these 35 years together. A farewell for now, with the awareness that some stories, precisely because they have left a lasting mark, may over time find new forms of expression.
